Day skipper |

This course covers the prescribed syllabus for the award of the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate.

This course is the first important rung of the RYA qualification ladder and is designed primarily for those who are new to sailing and boating, the dinghy sailor, those with crewing experience, and for the more experienced sailor who requires a knowledge of practical navigation from a basic introduction to a level at which coastal passages can be completed in safety.

We introduce you to basic chart work and the use of the magnetic compass, plotting and steering a course, position fixing and tidal calculations.

Seamanship includes nautical expressions, deck work and the safe conduct of a boat through an understanding of the steering and sailing rules. We cover the all-important subject of the weather; why it happens and what we need to do about it.

As the course draws to a conclusion, all these aspects are combined in showing you how to plan and conduct short coastal passages.
